The signs of sinus infection occur on the basis of the duration of the sinusitis and depend on the sinuses affected by the infection. For chronic sinusitis, that lasts between three to eight weeks, the signs include a continuous pain in the sinus area, severe and long headaches and chronic cough. For acute sinusitis, the symptoms are more or less the same but last for a shorter duration, around up to three weeks.

With an acute sinus infection you will have excess amounts of mucus that will trickle down the back of your throat and cause you to cough. So when the sinuses secrete mucus it is carried down to the throat area where it gets swallowed. You usually do not notice this small amount of mucus. But if you have a lot of mucus from a sinus infection you will have thicker more irritating mucus, often yellowish, and it may cause you to cough.

People often think if they have a cough they must have a lung problem. In many cases it may be simply sinus drainage. If you have a non-productive cough and congestion, chances are you have a sinus irritation, sinus infection, acute sinusitis or other sinus problem or condition and not a lung problem.

Treating acute sinusitis Normally there is no need for any treatment of this condition. The immune system will deal with the viral infection and the symptoms disappear within a week. If the symptoms do not clear within a week, antibiotics may be prescribed by doctors. Pain killers may be used for pain relief. Nasal sprays may help in clearing the congestion in the nasal passage. Traditionally acute sinusitis is treated with steam inhalation. A Warm shower is also advised for breathing in the moist and warm air. Applying warm and damp towels can ease facial pain.

This is the easiest way to start, as you have everything needed. If the system works well and you want to continue to do nasal irrigation on a daily basis, I would suggest choosing the pack of one dozen saline solution boxes, as the price is lower per box and there is only one

Original Throat Irrigator Tips', Breathe-ease' XL Nasal Moisturizer (this is the saline solution), and excerpts from "The Sinus Cure" by Dr. Grossan.

Symptoms of acute sinusitis The common symptoms are blocked nose or and throbbing pain in the infected area. High fever may also develop for some. Difficulty in breathing through the nose and in some cases reduced sense of smell may also occur. Sometimes there is a runny nose with greenish or yellow discharge caused by the infected mucus or pus. When the thick mucus blocks the channels the pain and tenderness may worsen. Headache, cough, pressure in the ears, toothache and bad breath are other symptoms.

This cough is the body's voluntary reaction to protect its airways. At the same time the mucus backs up in your sinus cavities and gets inflamed and hardens and starts a sinus infection because it can't move through the sinuses properly. One quart of mucus needs to move through the sinuses every day.

Prevention

Avoiding polluted air, reducing contact with people with cold and reducing alcohol consumption are helpful.

The signs of sinus infection, on the basis of the area affected, can be explained as follows. Pain in the forehead, pain while lowering the head, fever and nasal discharge are symptoms of frontal sinusitis. When I first started following Dr. Grossan's advice he suggested using a WaterPik machine, and these have been sold for years as devices to improve gum and dental health. Dr.

Grossan's company simply sold an adaptor and a saline solution, although one can use normal table salt. Although much more expensive than table salt, I find that the saline solution is convenient, works well, and has no preservatives. I usually purchase a dozen containers at a time, and these will last up to a year with one application per day. One simply puts a spoonful of saline solution into the WaterPik tank and then about 16 oz. of warm water to dissolve the powder. The nasal adaptor is then put into one nostril and the machine will gently propel half the liquid through one's nasal canal, and it will drain out the other side. One then puts the adaptor in the other nostril and repeats the procedure on that side. This process is done while leaning over a sink. I then normally put more water into the tank and use the WaterPik on my teeth as it was originally intended, and I've helped my gum and dental health as well. My dental hygienist has made several comments about how much better my gums and teeth are when I go in for cleanings, so there is a definite side benefit to this procedure. The whole effort only takes about 5 minutes or so, including wiping everything dry. I normally do the irrigation once a day about an hour before bed, but if I happen to wake up with more than the usual congestion in the morning, I'll do it then as well.

Sinuses permit the passage of air from the nose to the lungs. They protect the skull and make it lighter. Sinuses perform the function of evacuating mucus from the body. An inflammation of the sinuses blocks the nasal membrane lining, thereby, prohibiting the discharge of mucus. This trapping of mucus in the sinuses due to an inflammation of the nasal membrane causes severe pain and discomfort. This condition is known as a sinus infection, or more commonly, sinusitis.

The sinuses are small cavities in the bones of the skull that are filled with air. Their main purpose is to help with secretion of mucus and with voice resonance. There are four pairs of sinus cavities behind the forehead, cheek bones and nasal area.

Ethmoid sinusitis occurs with symptoms like pain in the lower part of the nose, between the eyes and in the inner corners of the eyes. Similarly, sphenoid sinusitis is accompanied with symptoms such as pain while bending forward, pain while lying backwards and a pain in the upper part of the head.

When the sinuses secrete this irritating mucus from an infection it may also cause a slight sore throat. This is called post-nasal drip. Often people think this sore throat is from other causes.

Causes of acute sinusitis They are usually caused by infection; most common of them is frontal sinus, affecting the cheekbones. Allergies may cause inflammation and block the nasal passages. If the wall between the nostrils called septum is corked it may block the sinus passage. Growth of tissues called nasal polyps may restrict the nasal channels. Some other medical conditions like cystic fibrosis, HIV and other diseases may cause nasal blockage.

Thus, the signs of sinus infection must be identified and treated as soon as possible. But no medication should be resorted to without consulting a doctor.

The Easiest Way to Start In the past couple of years Dr. Grossan's medical supply company has come up with its own sinus irrigator. It is called the Hydro Pulse' Nasal Irrigation System. One receives the Hydro Pulse Nasal/Sinus Irrigator', 2 Original Sinus Irrigator Tips ', 2

The job of the sinuses is to secrete mucus to provide proper lubrication and help the nose prevent dust, particles and harmful organisms from entering and infecting the respiratory tract.

Sinus irrigation is the main component in my personal arsenal to battle sinusitis and sinus infections. While struggling with numerous sinus infections a number of years ago, I ran across a book by Dr. Murray Grossan entitled 'The Sinus Cure- 7 Simple Steps'. This book explained the pulsating nasal irrigation system that I now use every day and have for a number of years. The book is a great resource for people suffering from sinusitis.

shipping charge to pay. Of course one could still purchase a WaterPik at a retail store and buy the Dr. Grossan's adaptor and saline solution to work with it. In fact I continue to do this in order to use the device on my teeth and gums since it works so well. Every year or so the WaterPik needs to be replaced. I suspect that the salt has a corrosive effect, although I rinse the machine with fresh water immediately after each use. The WaterPik company even sells a small travel model, and I use one of those when on the road.
